What Are Bean Sprouts? Bean sprouts are a small white shoot that sprouts from the mung bean. When growing your own vegetables it can be daunting: Is it safe to eat? Has it gone mouldy? How long can I store them for? After many requests we’re going to breakdown everything to look for before consuming bean sprouts, to ensure they’re edible and suitable for eating. Dish out and serve immediately.The crunchy vegetable bean sprouts are fun to grow, easy to cook with and delicious to eat. ![]() The bean sprouts should still be crisp and the green onions should be just wilted. Stir fry continuously until the bean sprouts just start to soften. Then add the bean sprouts, green onions, sesame oil (if using), a pinch of salt and a dash of white pepper. The onions will have lost their bite and both the onions and carrots should be tender but still crisp. This will not take long so do not overcook them. Then add the onions and carrots and stir fry continuously until just softened. When the wok is hot, add the oil and swirl the wok so that the bottom half of the wok is coated. Note that you shouldn’t season the vegetables too heavily because the teriyaki sauce is already very flavourful.ġ medium sized onion (cut in half from one end through to the other (lengthwise) then with the cut side facing down, cut into thin slices lengthwise)ġ medium sized carrot, peeled and julienned into 2-3 inch long piecesġ bunch of green onions, green parts only cut into 2 inch long pieces I like to use what the restaurants use – a stir fried bean sprout medley (recipe below). Serve with white rice and stir fried veggies. Toss with your cooked meat or pour over your dish. Adjust the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sugar to your taste. Reduce the heat and continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, until you achieve the desired consistency. In a small, heavy bottomed sauce pot, bring the remaining marinade to a rolling boil for 30 seconds. Cook the chicken by grilling, baking, or stir frying. Strain the chicken from the marinade and reserve the liquid. Marinate the chicken in the teriyaki sauce (recipe above) for at least 1 hour (up to over night in the refrigerator). Toasted sesame seeds (optional for garnish) Your choice of vegetables (see below for bean sprout medley recipe) Pour over cooked meat, vegetables, and/or rice.ģ boneless skinless chicken breasts or 4 boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite sized pieces ![]() ![]() If you are simply making a sauce: Stir in the cornstarch water and simmer, stirring occasionally, until you achieve the desired consistency. Strain the meat from the sauce and cook the meat. Then marinate your meat for at least 1 hour. If you are using this sauce as a marinade: Allow the sauce to cool completely. Stir to combine and simmer for another 3 minutes. Add soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sugar, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, and a pinch of black pepper. Reduce the heat to medium and maintain a strong simmer until the alcohol burns off, about 6 to 8 minutes. In a sauce pan over high heat, add rice wine and bring to a boil. Optional: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely gratedġ teaspoon cornstarch in a little bit of water Pinch of garlic powder or 1 garlic clove, finely minced Photos above: Teriyaki sauce used as a marinade (left) and used as a sauce poured over cooked chicken (right). This is my favourite teriyaki sauce recipe. Teriyaki sauce ranges from thick to thin and salty to sweet depending on where you’re getting it from.
